Arrival in Ecuador and Tulcán Cemetery

I arrived in Ecuador. This by itself was pretty uplifting. I just completed my first bike through a country having ridden from Cartagena to the border of Ecuador. My first order of business was to take care of some menial items like getting sim card for my phone and getting some cash. I also wanted to take a quick look a the cemetery in the border town of Tulcán. A nice couple from Guatapé had highly recommended it.

I did not get either of my errands done, but I did visit the cemetery and it was worthwhile. Apparently, in the 1930's, one of the groundskeepers started creating figures with the trees. The idea caught on and this cemetery became somewhat of a park. It is still an active cemetery. The grounds are a mix between a cemetery, a park and a sculpure garden. I think it is fantastic. Most cemeteries are places of death and sadness. Personally, I would be fine if my ashes were spread anywhere besides the city dump; however, if I were to be buried, I would prefer to be buried in place like this. This is a place where people want to visit, where kids play and where there is a general happiness in the air. This is my kind of cemetery.
